A 29-year-old man has been arrested after a female shop worker was assaulted in an incident at a filling station in West Belfast.

Officers were called to Lagmore Filling Station on the Stewartstown Road at approximately 7 pm on Tuesday night following reports of an assault and criminal damage.

Taking to Facebook, the filling station thanked the local community for supporting their staff in the aftermath.

“Thank you to all the great local people who came out and supported our staff last night following assault and violent threats to our staff as well as theft and criminal damage,” they said.

“We can only achieve our goal to make this the best store in the West when the Community stands behind us.

“Luckily, everyone is OK, and your support has emboldened us to keep trying to make a difference even in the face of disgusting behaviour.

“We will not tolerate this type of behaviour. Our teams are on the front line, simply trying to provide a great service to the community.”

A PSNI spokesperson said: “Police in west Belfast received a report of an assault on the Stewartstown Road at approximately 7:00 pm on Tuesday, 11th of August.

“Officers attended and a 29-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of common assault and criminal damage. “He remains in custody at this time.”

Local MLA for the area, Danny Baker, said that those responsible for the incident must be held accountable.

“Incidents like this are absolutely terrible, and attacks on local businesses and staff in the Colin area will not be tolerated,” he said.

“These businesses are providing a valuable service for the local community, and I send my full solidarity to the staff at the filling station.

“Those responsible for these incidents must be held accountable, and I would urge anyone who witnessed this incident to contact the PSNI.”
