A Coronation Street icon has announced they’ll be returning to the soap very soon after taking a brief hiatus
Coronation Street’s award-winning writer Jonathan Harvey has announced he’ll be making an epic comeback after taking some time away from the soap.
Over the past two decades the talented screen-writer has penned more than 331 episodes to date but has now confirmed that his final scenes are due to air very soon. In 2024, he confirmed he was taking a hiatus from his soap duties, telling fans at that time on social media: “I took a step back from writing Corrie back in April.
“After 20 years I wanted a break! The way the show works means I still have 2 episodes to air. Penultimate one is tonight and I’m very proud of it.”
His adoring legion of fans were devastated as they urged him to “hurry back,” to his post with one person even commenting that Jonathan was “one of the most talented writers” on Corrie.
Despite being famous for his writing talent, Jonathan actually started out his career as a secondary school teacher, before he turned his attentions to playwriting in 1987.
One of his most famous creations still to this day is Beautiful Thing, which he penned 32 years ago, about two teenage gay teenagers who meet after living next-door to each other on a London social housing estate.
In 1996, the unique drama found was directed by Hettie MacDonald and found its way onto Channel 4 where it gained mass popularity as fans tuned in to witness the complex lives of an adolescent gay couple.
The production which starred Linda Henry, best known for her role of Shirley Carter and Tameka Empson, also famed for her EastEnders role as Kim Fox, was set in a time when the gay community had been rocked by the AIDs virus.
Other claims to fame, include, Jonathan’s writing role on Gimme, Gimme, Gimme, a popular sitcom that aired for three seasons in 1999 and stared Kathy Burke.
Jonathan made his Granada Television debut back in 2004, forming part of the team who helped to pen the Todd Grimshaw coming out story and becoming a regular screenwriter for the soap, despite his initial reluctance.
Other notable contributions include, Corrie! which toured across the UK for a year from 2010, in support of the 50th anniversary celebrations, he also penned the spin-off series Ken and Deirdre’s Bedtime Stories.
In a more recent post about his endeavours, Jonathan shared that he would be making a comeback to Corrie very soon. On Instagram, he told fans his “first episode” since returning to his role was about to air.
Along with a happy picture of many members of the ITV soap cast, dressed in bright coloured wedding attire, he announced: “My first episode of Corrie since I came back will air soon. Dev and Bernie’s wedding.”
Giving insight at what’s to come, he hinted: “But this being modern day Corrie it wouldn’t be a proper episode without the arrival some blue lights.”
“Thank goodness you’re back, that’s really, really great news,” said one elated fan as another person shared the same sentiment, commenting: “So glad you’re back.”
Coronation Street is on ITV at 8pm Monday, Wednesday and Friday and available to stream from 7am on ITVX
