Woman rescued from River Lagan in Belfast in early hours incident

A specialist swimmer was involved in the rescue operation

A woman was rescued from the River Lagan in Belfast during an incident in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Emergency services were called to reports of a “person in distress” entering the water close to the Waterfront Hall at around 3.30am on November 29.

Police, firefighters, ambulance, and rescue teams attended the scene, with a fire service rescue swimmer being deployed to keep the person afloat.

The Community Rescue Service provided immediate medical assistance, before the casualty was handed over to the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service.

Two ambulance crews attended the scene, with the person being taken to the Royal Victoria Hospital.

A spokesperson for the Community Rescue Service said: “Our volunteers were tasked by Police at approximately 3.30am to a person in distress in the River Lagan.

“A CRS response boat was quickly launched and, working in close coordination with City Centre CCTV operators, made their way to the person in distress where Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service deployed a Rescue swimmer to help keep the person afloat.

“The casualty and rescue swimmer were brought aboard the CRS boat and immediate medical assistance administered. The casualty was handed over to our colleagues in Northern Ireland Ambulance Service.”

A spokesperson for the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service said: “The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service received a 999 call at 03:29 following reports of an incident in the Lanyon Place area of Belfast.

“NIAS despatched 2 Emergency Crews to the incident. Following assessment and initial treatment at the scene, one patient was taken to RVH.”
