A Northern Ireland council has been investigated by HMRC into an alleged “deliberate” tax underpayment.
The Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS) through a council source can reveal that Lisburn and Castlereagh City Council is said to have understated its VAT with a number of errors.
It is understood that LCCC is challenging the alleged accounting error with claims of a software system issue amid a potential HMRC fine of over £600,000.

The LDRS contacted the council and HMRC.
A spokesperson for LCCC said: “The council has no comment to make on this matter.”
A HMRC spokesperson said:“We cannot comment on an identifiable business or individual due to taxpayer confidentiality law.”
HMRC fines can vary depending on the disclosure of the person or organisation involved and can range from 30 to 100% of the potential lost revenue.
