New Zealand’s Borderline have released their new EP Chrysalis via EMPIRE, accompanied by a video for focus track ‘Breakdown’, directed by Tom Grut and filmed in their hometown of Tāmaki Makaurau / Auckland.
Formed from long-time friendships and a shared history of making music together, Borderline’s sound blends elements of indie-pop, funk, and alternative rock. Members Ben Glanfield, Jackson Boswell, Matthew McFadden, and Max Harries have built their reputation steadily, first in local scenes and more recently on international stages.
Chrysalis features previously released singles ‘New Romance’, ‘Heartbeat’, and ‘When It’s Raining’, all of which have found support across streaming platforms and radio—appearing on editorial playlists such as New Music Friday, Alt Pop, and receiving airplay on triple j, SYN, BBC Radio 1, and U.S. college radio.
The group originally formed in 2019, with their debut single ‘Spinning’ entering the NZ Artists Hot 20 and NZ Hot 40. Their 2023 debut EP Perfect Movie Scene delivered charting tracks like ‘Going Home (Bitter)’ and ‘This Is Not Love’, leading to sold-out headline shows and growing attention abroad.
Following their breakout performances at SXSW in Austin and headline sets in New York and Los Angeles, Borderline made their UK debut at The Great Escape, alongside shows in Brighton and London. Their new material draws influence from artists including Fleetwood Mac, The 1975, and The Japanese House, with a strong focus on melodic songwriting and live dynamics.
The band will head to Australia in September for a run of dates including their first appearance at BIGSOUND in Brisbane, followed by headline shows in Melbourne and Sydney.
