Trai Hume says Northern Ireland have to “believe anything is possible” when they face Germany in a crucial 2026 World Cup qualifier at Windsor Park tonight.
Michael O’Neill’s men are level on points with the Germans and Slovakia at the top of Group A at the midway point in the qualifying campaign.
A positive result against Julian Nagelsmann’s side in Belfast would put Northern Ireland in a strong position with two games to go and Hume insists belief is the key
“Well, you have to believe anything is possible, really. If you don’t believe, then you’re not going to be able to do it,” said the Sunderland man
“We know how strong Germany are. We obviously knew that from Cologne when they won 3-1. We were in the game for a large part of it, but at that level, if you make mistakes or if you slow down, you’ll get punished for it. We know the challenge that we face, but you have to believe, always.”
The home support played a major role in Northern Ireland’s excellent win over Slovakia on Friday night and Hume is hoping for more of the same this evening.
“Every game I’ve played at an international level, whether it’s home or away, the fans are magnificent and they’ve always been that.
“The atmosphere the other night was probably one of the best I’ve played under for Northern Ireland, so hopefully they can match that against Germany and push us on.”
The game also marks a major milestone for Michael O’Neill as it’s 100th in charge of his country
“I first came into the squad under Ian Barclough, he gave me my debut, but I didn’t get many games,” recalled Hume.
“Whenever Michael came in, I started playing games, hopefully, I’m paying that off for him.”
