Emmerdale fans have been left scratching their heads as they try to work out where they’ve seen newcomer Kev Townsend before, played by actor Chris Coghill

Emmerdale viewers have figured out where they’ve spotted mysterious newcomer Kev Townsend previously.

It was announced earlier this year that actor Chris Coghill was set to join the ITV soap.

Revealing the fresh addition, it was hinted that Kev was an enigmatic figure arriving in the village seeking directions.

Nevertheless, it has now emerged that Kev is wed to Robert Sugden (Ryan Hawley), whom he married whilst behind bars.

Questioning why he was granted day release after his offences, Kev confessed to Robert he had been given merely six months to live, reports the Daily Star.

Following Chris’ first appearance, viewers flocked to social media to reveal where they’d previously encountered the actor.

Posting to an Emmerdale Facebook group, one viewer highlighted: “He played Tony who groomed Whitney.”

Another user responded: “I thought I recognised him.”

A third person commented: “I didn’t realise he was Craig in Shameless. He doesn’t talk like he does now in Emmerdale.”

Discussing his fresh role, Chris previously stated: “I am really happy to be joining the cast of Emmerdale.

“Kev is definitely going to shake things up a bit and I’m looking forward to getting cracking.”

Soap enthusiasts will recognise Chris from his portrayal as Tony King in EastEnders who was the former fiancé of Bianca Jackson (Patsy Palmer) and featured in the BBC serial drama for one year from 2008 until 2009.

Following his release from prison for assaulting a teenage boy who had made advances towards Whitney Dean (Shona McGarty), it was unveiled that Tony had been sexually abusing Bianca’s stepdaughter Whitney since she was 12.

He then started grooming Lauren Branning (Madeline Duggan), before being apprehended when his vile actions came to light.

More than three years after his arrest, Whitney received a note via a former cellmate of Tony’s, claiming he always loved her.

She decided to confront him in prison, only to discover he had taken his own life.

Tony isn’t Chris’ only significant role as the Mancunian recently featured as Hobbs in British Spy Thriller Slow Horses and also portrayed Craig Garland in Channel 4’s Shameless from 2005 until 2006.

Emmerdale airs weeknights on ITV1 at 7.30pm and available to stream from 7am on ITVX
