Rory McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood secured victory in the morning foursomes session of the Ryder Cup, with the Masters champion firing back at the crowd after a noisy interruption
Rory McIlroy responded to taunts during Saturday’s morning session of the Ryder Cup by letting off steam, then delivering a brilliant approach to secure another point for Team Europe at Bethpage Black.
McIlroy seemed to make an offensive gesture towards the home crowd during yesterday’s tied fourball match where he and Shane Lowry faced off against Patrick Cantlay and Ben Griffin.
However, he returned this morning with his foursomes partner Tommy Fleetwood and for the second consecutive day, they claimed a comfortable victory over US pair Harris English and Collin Morikawa.
The Americans were given a glimmer of hope when they won back-to-back holes at 14 and 15, but Fleetwood dashed their hopes with his birdie putt on 16 after McIlroy’s approach from the rough ended three feet from the pin.
McIlroy had to initially step away from the shot due to the noise from the crowd. ‘Guys, shut the f*** up’, he said, before delivering the final blow, reports the Irish Mirror.
When asked after the 3&2 victory if it was about maintaining mental toughness when playing away from home in the Ryder Cup, McIlroy replied: “Yeah you do, you really just have to focus on the task in hand. And I think in the team format, foursomes, fourball, you can stick together with your partner and it makes it a bit easier.”
Fleetwood praised McIlroy’s contribution to what is the Englishman’s 10th win in Ryder Cup matches. “Well, it’s Rory McIlroy first,” he smiled.
“I mean, I can play from all over the place, the way he hits it and we loved the chance to play together in Rome, our games match very nicely and we’re very close off the course.
“Like Rory’s already said, our families are so close, but yeah, I’m just the lucky one who gets to play alongside Rory McIlroy in the foursomes and I’ll take that any day.”
McIlroy added: “And, you know, what Tommy said, the feeling is absolutely mutual, it’s an absolute pleasure to play alongside him. We had a great time in Rome and we were able to back that up with two great wins here. We’re excited where our team is and we’ve got to keep the foot down.”
