“The care, compassion and dedication from every member of staff has been truly outstanding, and we are deeply grateful.”
DUP Fermanagh and South Tyrone MLA Deborah Erskine has announced the birth of her baby daughter who was born eight weeks premature.
Earlier this month, Deborah announced that she would be stepping back from her Stormont duties earlier than she had anticipated due to advice from her doctors.
Unlike other professions, MLAs are not entitled to maternity leave.
Announcing the birth on Facebook, Deborah Erskine said: “Our beautiful daughter, Olivia Rhoda Jean Erskine, arrived on Wednesday 17th September, eight weeks early. She’s our little heart warrior, already showing her strength in the Royal Neonatal Unit and taking brave steps forward each day.
“For nearly three weeks, the Royal Victoria Hospital has been my home as I received treatment for Olivia before her arrival. The care, compassion and dedication from every member of staff has been truly outstanding, and we are deeply grateful. There have been so many health professionals who we will never forget. They have went over and beyond for us in so many ways. True unsung heroes.
“Thank you to everyone for your kindness, love and support. We would be so grateful if you could continue to keep Olivia and her amazing care teams in your prayers as we look forward to the day when we can bring her home.”
Among those wishing Deborah well was former First Minister Arlene Foster, who wrote: “Welcome to the very special girl who just couldn’t wait to come and see her mum and dad! Will keep you all in my prayers and can’t wait to meet her xxx”
Independent MLA Claire Sugden added: “Congratulations. Such lovely news. Much love to you and your wee family.”
