A councillor has praised council action just days after child safety concerns raised in chambers.

A play park’s overgrown bushes have been cut back amid concerns they provided cover for sinister photographs of children to be taken.

Fears were raised at Lagan Valley Island chamber recently after a report was made to the PSNI, with a spokesperson confirming police were taking the matter “seriously”.

Just days later Lisburn and Castlereagh City Council took “maintenance” action at Hilden Park to dramatically chop away the green areas suspected of camouflaging the illegal activity.

Lisburn North independent councillor, Gary Hynds said:”I sincerely thank the council, especially the director and parks team, for their prompt action at Hilden Play Park.

“As an elected representative, my role is to amplify our community’s voice and drive positive change.

“I highlighted the issues at Hilden Park not to criticise, but to push for progress and make our area better on the basis of residents’ real concerns of illegal activity behind the high bushes close to where children were playing, including allegations of pictures being taken.

“Safe play parks are essential for our families, and I hope this response restores confidence, ensuring Hilden Play Park remains a cherished space for our children.”

The elected member had told the chamber of “parents’ afraid” to bring their children over concerns of illegal activity taking place behind the bushes.

The councillor made claims of people drinking and taking drugs as well as taking photographs from behind the bushes, with a clear view to the playing area.

A council officer had replied at the time saying a multi-agency response would tackle the anti-social activities raised.

However, when the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS) asked LCCC if the bush trimming was in reaction to the child safety concerns, the council said: “The council has undertaken maintenance operations at Hilden Park to include tree and hedging works.

“These works encourage healthy regrowth whilst ensuring our open spaces are tidy and welcoming for all.”
